Makokou
Makokou is the capital of the Ogooué-Ivindo province in northeastern Gabon. It is situated on the Ivindo River and serves as a regional administrative and commercial center.
The town is primarily known for its location within a heavily forested region, rich in biodiversity and natural resources. Logging and mining have historically been significant industries in the area, though conservation efforts are increasingly focused on preserving the region's ecological value.
Makokou is accessible by road and air, with a small airport serving the town. The population is relatively small, reflecting the sparsely populated nature of the Ogooué-Ivindo province. Access to healthcare and education can be limited due to the town's remote location.
The area surrounding Makokou is characterized by equatorial rainforest, home to diverse wildlife including primates, elephants, and numerous bird species. Ecotourism is a developing sector, with opportunities for exploring the natural environment.
