Venyov

Venyov is a town and the administrative center of Venyovsky District in Tula Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Venyovka River, a tributary of the Osyotr, 157 kilometers (97 mi) southeast of Tula, the administrative center of the oblast.

History:

Venyov is one of the oldest towns in the Tula Region. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1371. During the period of the Golden Horde, it served as a fortified outpost on the southern borders of the Ryazan Principality. In the 16th century, it became part of the Moscow State and played a significant role in the defense against Tatar raids. It was repeatedly burned and rebuilt.

In 1777, Venyov was granted town status and became the administrative center of Venyovsky Uyezd within the Tula Governorate. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a regional trading center.

Economy:

The economy of Venyov is primarily based on agriculture and food processing. There are also small industrial enterprises.

Culture and Landmarks:

Venyov features several historical and architectural landmarks, including the Church of the Epiphany (1801), the Resurrection Cathedral, and several buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The town also has a local history museum.

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Venyov serves as the administrative center of Venyovsky District. As a municipal division, the town of Venyov is incorporated within Venyovsky Municipal District as the Town of Venyov Urban Settlement.
