Jim Maloney (politician)

Jim Maloney (born October 17, 1948) is an American politician who served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives representing Connecticut's 5th congressional district from 1997 to 2003.

Maloney was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Harvard University in 1972 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1980. Prior to entering politics, he worked as a lawyer.

Maloney entered Congress in 1997, defeating incumbent Republican Gary Franks. He served three terms. His political positions were generally considered moderate.

In 2002, Maloney was defeated by Republican Nancy Johnson in a close and highly contested race. The district's boundaries had been redrawn following the 2000 census, making it more favorable to Republicans.

After leaving Congress, Maloney worked as a lobbyist. He has remained involved in Democratic Party politics in Connecticut. His political career is largely remembered for his upset victory in 1996 and his subsequent narrow defeat in 2002, both highlighting the competitive nature of Connecticut's 5th congressional district.
