Rif Dimashq offensive (August–November 2014)

The Rif Dimashq offensive (August–November 2014) was a military operation conducted by the Syrian Arab Army and its allies against rebel forces in the Rif Dimashq Governorate, surrounding the Syrian capital of Damascus. The offensive aimed to consolidate government control over strategically important areas, sever rebel supply lines, and secure the capital from rebel attacks.

Key objectives included capturing or securing areas along the international highway connecting Damascus with Jordan, as well as pushing back rebel forces from key towns and villages in the Eastern Ghouta region and the Qalamoun Mountains.

The offensive involved heavy fighting, including artillery bombardments, airstrikes, and ground assaults. Both pro-government forces and rebel groups suffered significant casualties. The Syrian Arab Army and its allies were supported by Hezbollah and other foreign militias, while rebel groups were comprised of various factions, including those affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and Islamist groups.

Outcomes of the offensive were mixed. While pro-government forces made some territorial gains, including securing certain areas along the international highway, they were unable to fully achieve their objectives of completely eliminating the rebel presence in Rif Dimashq. Fighting continued in the region following the conclusion of the offensive in November 2014, with ongoing skirmishes and clashes between government and rebel forces. The offensive also resulted in significant displacement of civilians and further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region.
