Nab Scar
Nab Scar is a fell in the English Lake District, located to the north of Rydal Water. It forms part of the Fairfield horseshoe, though it is often considered a subsidiary top rather than a major peak in its own right.
The fell's name is of Old Norse origin, with "nab" meaning a prominent projecting rock, and "scar" referring to a steep rock face. This aptly describes the fell's character, particularly its western side which presents a craggy and precipitous appearance above Rydal Water.
Nab Scar's summit provides excellent views, including those of Rydal Water, Grasmere, and the surrounding fells. It is a popular spot for walkers, offering a relatively straightforward ascent from Rydal village and forming a common starting point for the full Fairfield horseshoe circuit. The climb can be steep in places, particularly on the western face.
While less frequently visited as a standalone destination compared to the higher peaks of Fairfield and Helvellyn, Nab Scar offers a rewarding experience with its accessible location, panoramic views, and distinctive topographical features. It is a significant feature of the landscape between Ambleside and Grasmere.
