William Stowe (rower)

William Stowe (born March 27, 1940, in Oak Park, Illinois, died February 8, 2016, in Lake Placid, New York) was an American rower best known for winning a gold medal in the men's eight event at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Stowe began his rowing career at the Naval Academy. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and later served in the U.S. Navy. He was part of the Vesper Boat Club crew that represented the United States at the 1964 Olympics. The American eight, which included Stowe, prevailed over the favored German crew in a tightly contested final.

After his rowing career, Stowe remained involved in the sport, serving as a coach and mentor. He lived in Lake Placid, New York, for many years. He was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 1975.
