Centre Island (Te Anau)

Centre Island is a small island located in Lake Te Anau, in the Fiordland region of New Zealand's South Island. It is situated near the middle of the South Fiord, also known as the Te Anau South Arm. The island is a significant conservation area, known particularly for its role in the management of endangered bird species, specifically the flightless takahē. A fenced sanctuary exists on the island, protecting the takahē from introduced predators such as stoats, ferrets, and cats. Intensive management programs, including predator control and supplementary feeding, are implemented to support the takahē population. Access to Centre Island is restricted and requires permits due to its sensitive ecological nature and the ongoing conservation work.
