SBS (Australian TV channel)
The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) is a hybrid-funded Australian public service broadcaster. Established in 1975, its primary mission is to provide multilingual and multicultural broadcasting services that inform, educate, and entertain all Australians, and in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society.
SBS operates a national network of free-to-air television channels, radio stations, and online platforms. Its television channels include SBS, SBS Viceland, SBS Food, SBS World Movies, and NITV (National Indigenous Television). Radio services are broadcast in multiple languages, catering to a diverse range of communities.
SBS is funded through a combination of government funding and commercial revenue, primarily from advertising. However, it maintains a commitment to independence and impartiality in its news and current affairs programming.
A key element of SBS's charter is to provide programs that are not generally available from commercial broadcasters, focusing on content from diverse cultures, documentaries, films, and educational programs. It also plays a significant role in promoting social inclusion and understanding among different cultural groups in Australia.
NITV, part of the SBS network, focuses on programming produced by, for, and about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
SBS's online platforms offer a wide range of on-demand content, news, and information in multiple languages.
