W Series (championship)
The W Series was a single-seater motor racing championship for female drivers only. It was launched in October 2018 and held its first race in May 2019. The series aimed to provide opportunities for women to progress in motorsport, traditionally a male-dominated field.
The championship used identical Tatuus T-318 Formula 3 cars, ensuring a level playing field where driver skill was the primary differentiator. Races were typically held as support events for Formula 1 or other major motorsport events, offering the drivers exposure and experience within a professional racing environment.
The initial seasons offered a prize fund, with the champion receiving a significant amount to further their racing career. The top drivers in the series also earned FIA Super Licence points, crucial for progressing to Formula 1.
In 2022, the W Series faced financial difficulties and was forced to end its season prematurely. The financial challenges ultimately led to the cancellation of the 2023 season and the eventual liquidation of the company. Despite its relatively short lifespan, the W Series raised the profile of women in motorsport and provided a platform for talented female drivers to showcase their abilities. Notable champions include Jamie Chadwick, who won the title in 2019, 2021, and 2022 (shortened season).
