Veranda

A veranda (also spelled verandah) is a roofed, open-air gallery or portico, typically attached to the outside of a building. It is essentially an extended, roofed platform along one or more sides of a structure, providing a shaded outdoor space.

Verandas are often partially enclosed by a railing and frequently extend across the front and sides of a building. They may be supported by columns or posts. The primary function of a veranda is to provide a sheltered area for relaxation or recreation while also shielding the interior of the building from direct sunlight and rain.

The term "veranda" is believed to have originated in India, derived from the Hindi word varanda. From there, it spread through British colonial architecture and subsequently became prevalent in various architectural styles worldwide, particularly in warm and subtropical climates. Verandas contribute to a building's aesthetic appeal and can serve as a transition zone between the interior and exterior spaces. They are often considered a characteristic feature of certain architectural styles, such as Queenslander architecture in Australia and Southern plantation homes in the United States.
