The New Year (band)
The New Year is an American indie rock band formed in 1999 in Dallas, Texas. It is primarily composed of former members of the band Bedhead, namely brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane.
The band's formation followed the dissolution of Bedhead in 1998. Matt Kadane handles the primary songwriting and vocal duties, while Bubba Kadane contributes guitar and other instrumentation. Their music is characterized by its minimalist arrangements, slow tempos, introspective lyrics, and atmospheric soundscapes. Often described as slowcore or sadcore, The New Year builds upon the foundational elements of Bedhead's sound, exploring themes of melancholy, loss, and introspection.
The band has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Newness Ends (2001), The End Is Near (2004), and The New Year (2008). These albums solidified their reputation within the indie rock scene. While the band has maintained a relatively low profile compared to some of their contemporaries, their consistent output and distinctive sound have earned them a dedicated following. Their most recent album, Snow, was released in 2017.
The New Year continues to tour and record, remaining a significant influence on the slowcore genre.
