Morské oko (Slovak for "Eye of the Sea") is the largest lake in the Vihorlat Mountains and in eastern Slovakia. It is located in the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area.
Overview
Morské oko is a natural dam lake formed by a massive landslide. It is situated at an altitude of 618 meters above sea level and covers an area of approximately 75 hectares (190 acres). The lake reaches a maximum depth of 25 meters (82 feet). It is fed primarily by precipitation and several small streams. The outflow from the lake forms the Okna stream.
Geology and Formation
The lake was created by a landslide triggered by tectonic activity and erosion. The landslide blocked the valley, creating a natural dam that impounded water, forming the lake. The geological composition of the surrounding area contributes to the lake's water quality.
Flora and Fauna
The area around Morské oko is characterized by dense forests, primarily composed of beech and fir trees. The lake and its surroundings are home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. Fish species include trout, minnow, and perch. The area is also a habitat for various birds, amphibians, and mammals.
Recreation and Tourism
Morské oko is a popular tourist destination. Hiking trails lead to the lake from several nearby villages. Swimming is generally prohibited to protect the lake's ecosystem. Boating is sometimes permitted with restrictions, typically using rowboats. The surrounding forests offer opportunities for hiking and nature observation. A hotel and restaurant are located near the lake.
Protection and Conservation
The lake and its surrounding area are protected as part of the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area. Conservation efforts aim to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Morské oko and its surrounding environment. This includes regulating tourism, managing forestry practices, and monitoring water quality.
