Acadia (federal electoral district)

Acadia was a federal electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that was used for elections to the House of Commons of Canada between 1968 and 1997. The riding was created in 1966 from parts of Gloucester and Kent ridings.

It existed for the following federal elections:

  • 1968 federal election
  • 1972 federal election
  • 1974 federal election
  • 1979 federal election
  • 1980 federal election
  • 1984 federal election
  • 1988 federal election
  • 1993 federal election

In 1996, the district was abolished and its territory was redistributed into the ridings of Beauséjour and Miramichi.

Historically, Acadia was known as a stronghold for the Liberal Party of Canada, reflecting the significant Acadian population within its boundaries. The riding's name itself is a reference to Acadia, the historical region and home to the Acadian people. The electoral district consistently elected Liberal Members of Parliament with the exception of the 1984 election that saw a Progressive Conservative candidate win the riding as part of the larger Progressive Conservative sweep across the country.
