USS Upshur (DD-144)

USS Upshur (DD-144) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War I and World War II. Named for Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur, she was commissioned in 1919 and served primarily in the Atlantic, participating in various training exercises and fleet operations.

During the interwar period, Upshur also engaged in goodwill tours and patrolled the Caribbean. With the outbreak of World War II, Upshur was assigned to convoy escort duty, protecting merchant ships and troop transports from German U-boats in the Atlantic. She also performed anti-submarine patrols.

Throughout the war, Upshur conducted numerous transatlantic crossings, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort by ensuring the safe arrival of vital supplies and personnel. She earned one battle star for her World War II service. Decommissioned in 1945 following the end of the war, Upshur was scrapped in 1946. Her service reflected the evolution of destroyer roles from coastal patrol to vital convoy protection in times of conflict.
