Qala (film)
Qala is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language psychological drama film directed by Anvitaa Dutt, and produced by Clean Slate Filmz. Set in the 1940s, the film stars Tripti Dimri in the titular role as Qala Manjushree, a young and talented playback singer struggling with anxiety and her complex relationship with her mother, Urmila. The film explores themes of ambition, mental health, familial relationships, and the pressures of artistic success within the context of the Indian classical music industry. Babil Khan, in his debut role, plays Jagan, a promising new singer who further complicates Qala's already fragile mental state. Swastika Mukherjee portrays Urmila Manjushree, Qala's demanding and emotionally distant mother, whose aspirations for her daughter heavily influence Qala's life choices and emotional turmoil. The film received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, cinematography, music, and its exploration of mental health issues. It was released on Netflix on December 1, 2022.
