Andrew Turner (politician)
Andrew Turner (born 12 September 1953) is a British Conservative Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Isle of Wight from 2001 to 2017.
Turner was educated at state schools, including the village school in Arreton on the Isle of Wight, before attending Sandown High School. He later gained a BSc degree in Civil Engineering from University College London.
Prior to entering Parliament, Turner worked as a teacher and subsequently as a local government officer. He served as a councillor on the Isle of Wight Council from 1993 to 2001, holding positions including Leader of the Council.
In the 2001 general election, Turner was elected as the MP for the Isle of Wight, succeeding the Liberal Democrat MP Peter Brand. He retained the seat in the 2005, 2010, and 2015 general elections. During his time in Parliament, he served on various select committees, including the Education and Skills Select Committee and the Transport Select Committee. He also held positions within the Conservative Party, including as a Parliamentary Private Secretary.
Turner was known for his advocacy for the Isle of Wight, particularly regarding issues such as ferry services, infrastructure, and funding for the island.
In 2017, Turner announced he would not be standing for re-election following an investigation into his personal conduct. He was succeeded by Bob Seely as the MP for the Isle of Wight.
