Daily News (Harare)

The Daily News (Harare) was a Zimbabwean independent daily newspaper published in Harare. It was a prominent voice of opposition to the Robert Mugabe government. The newspaper was initially launched in 1999 and quickly gained a wide readership due to its critical reporting and coverage of issues often ignored by state-controlled media.

The Daily News faced significant challenges and persecution during its operations. It was frequently targeted by the government through various means, including legal challenges, arrests of journalists, and bombings of its printing press. Its operations were suspended multiple times, most notably in 2003 when the newspaper was shut down for failing to register with the Media and Information Commission.

After years of legal battles and struggles to resume publication, the Daily News eventually returned to newsstands in 2011 under new ownership and management. While its return was welcomed, the media landscape in Zimbabwe had significantly changed. It continued to operate as a daily newspaper until ceasing publication in 2023. The reasons cited for its closure included the challenging economic environment and the declining circulation of print media.
