Jacob Thomas (VC)

Jacob Thomas (VC) was an Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was born in Parur, Travancore (now Kerala, India).

Thomas served as a Sepoy in the 4th Battalion, 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, British Indian Army during World War II. The action for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross took place on 9 March 1941 at Keren, Eritrea.

During a counter-attack, Sepoy Jacob Thomas's platoon came under heavy fire, suffering many casualties. Sepoy Thomas, without orders and on his own initiative, picked up a Bren gun and continued to advance, silencing one enemy machine-gun post. He then continued forward, engaging another enemy post which was holding up the advance. Despite being wounded twice, he managed to silence the second post before collapsing from his wounds. His actions enabled his platoon to continue their advance and capture the objective. He later died of his wounds.

His bravery and selfless action inspired his comrades and contributed significantly to the success of the assault. His Victoria Cross citation recognizes his extraordinary courage and devotion to duty.
