James Wiseman (priest)

James Wiseman (born c. 1720, died 1793) was an English Roman Catholic priest and Vicar Apostolic. He served as the Vicar Apostolic of the London District from 1772 until his death in 1793.

Wiseman's appointment came at a delicate time for English Catholics, facing continued legal restrictions and societal prejudices. He navigated the complexities of this era, working to maintain the Catholic faith and community within the boundaries of the law. His tenure saw the gradual relaxation of some penal laws against Catholics, culminating in the Catholic Relief Act of 1778. Wiseman played a significant role in advocating for this relief, representing the interests of English Catholics to the government.

He resided primarily in London, where he oversaw the administration of the sacraments, the ordination of priests, and the general pastoral care of Catholics within his jurisdiction. He is remembered for his diplomacy, prudence, and commitment to the Catholic Church in England during a period of significant transition. He was succeeded as Vicar Apostolic by John Douglass.
