Fontainhas (quarter)
Fontainhas is a historic Latin Quarter located in Panjim (also known as Panaji), the capital city of Goa, India. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forming part of the "Churches and Convents of Goa" inscription.
Fontainhas is characterized by its well-preserved Portuguese architecture, narrow winding streets, and vibrant-colored houses. The area retains a distinct European atmosphere, reflecting Goa's long period under Portuguese colonial rule. Many buildings feature overhanging balconies, red-tiled roofs, and intricate decorative details.
The quarter is home to a mix of residential buildings, art galleries, restaurants, and guesthouses. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in experiencing Goa's unique cultural heritage. Preservation efforts are ongoing to maintain the historical character of Fontainhas and protect it from modern development. The name "Fontainhas" is derived from the Portuguese word for "little fountain," named after a spring located at the foot of the Altinho hills.
