Orxines

Orxines was a Persian nobleman and satrap of Parthia under the Achaemenid Empire during the reign of Alexander the Great. He is primarily known for his betrayal of the Macedonian general Philip, whom Alexander had appointed as satrap following the conquest of the region.

Following Alexander's death, Orxines attempted to assert his independence and rule Parthia as a sovereign entity. He amassed a considerable treasure through oppressive taxation and plunder, aiming to establish himself as a powerful independent ruler.

However, his ambitions were short-lived. Peithon, one of Alexander's generals, was dispatched to deal with Orxines. Accusations were levied against Orxines by the local population, likely encouraged by Peithon. Based on these allegations of tyranny and misrule, Orxines was condemned and executed. The collected treasures were seized by Peithon, further consolidating his own power in the chaotic period following Alexander's death. His actions exemplified the power struggles and instability that characterized the Diadochi period.
