Chiquilá
Chiquilá is a small coastal town located in the northeastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is part of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, in the state of Quintana Roo. Its primary significance lies in being the main ferry port for accessing Isla Holbox, a popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches, whale shark tours, and laid-back atmosphere.
Chiquilá itself is a relatively small settlement, characterized by its humble infrastructure and local businesses catering primarily to the tourist traffic heading to and from Holbox. The town's economy is largely dependent on the ferry service and related services like parking, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Beyond its role as a transportation hub, Chiquilá offers a glimpse into a more traditional Yucatecan way of life, distinct from the more developed tourist areas along the Riviera Maya.
The ferry service from Chiquilá to Holbox operates frequently throughout the day, with multiple companies providing transportation. The journey typically takes around 20-30 minutes. Due to the shallow waters surrounding Holbox, larger vehicles are unable to access the island directly, making Chiquilá the essential point of access for visitors. The town experiences fluctuations in activity, with significantly higher traffic during peak tourist seasons and weekends.
