John Campbell (Irish surgeon)
John Campbell (1821-1861) was an Irish surgeon known for his contributions to the field of ophthalmology and his work on the surgical treatment of cataracts. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and received his medical education at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1844. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1847.
Campbell served as a surgeon at the Jervis Street Hospital in Dublin and also maintained a private practice. He was particularly recognized for his skill in performing cataract operations, adopting and refining techniques of the time. He published several articles on ophthalmic surgery and related topics in medical journals.
His work contributed to the advancement of surgical practices in Ireland during the mid-19th century.
