National United Party (Vanuatu)
The National United Party (NUP) is a political party in Vanuatu. It was founded by Walter Lini, the first Prime Minister of Vanuatu, following a split within the Vanua'aku Pati in 1991.
Lini led the NUP until his death in 1999. Following his death, the party experienced internal divisions and varying levels of electoral success. Its platform generally aligns with Melanesian socialist principles, emphasizing indigenous rights, rural development, and a mixed economy. The NUP has often played a significant role in coalition governments in Vanuatu, making it a key player in the country's political landscape.
The party has been represented in Parliament since its formation and has held ministerial portfolios at various times. Its influence has waxed and waned over the years, reflecting the dynamic nature of Vanuatu's multi-party system. Prominent figures within the party, aside from Walter Lini, have included members of parliament and ministers who have contributed to shaping Vanuatu's political and social policies.
