Serchio
The Serchio is a river in the Tuscany region of Italy. It rises in the Apuan Alps, near the border with Emilia-Romagna, and flows southwards for approximately 111 kilometers (69 miles) before emptying into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Pisa.
The river's course runs through the Garfagnana area, known for its scenic beauty and historical significance. Major towns and cities situated along the Serchio include Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Lucca, though Lucca lies just slightly off the main course, benefiting from its waters.
Historically, the Serchio has been important for transportation, agriculture, and industry in the region. While no longer a major commercial waterway, it continues to provide water for irrigation and supports a diverse ecosystem.
The Serchio is also a popular destination for recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, and hiking along its banks. Its watershed is characterized by a varied landscape of mountains, hills, and plains, contributing to the region's overall biodiversity.
