Mireuksan (South Gyeongsang)
Mireuksan (미륵산) is a prominent mountain located in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. Its name, Mireuksan, translates to "Maitreya Mountain," referring to the Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the Future. The mountain is a popular destination for hikers and tourists due to its scenic beauty and panoramic views of the surrounding islands of the Hallyeohaesang National Park.
Mireuksan reaches a height of 461 meters (1,512 feet) and offers several hiking trails varying in difficulty. The summit can be reached by foot or via a cable car, providing convenient access for visitors of all ages and physical abilities.
The mountain is significant in Korean Buddhism and features several temples and shrines, including Yonghwa Temple (용화사) and Mireuksanseokbul (미륵산석불), a large stone statue of the Maitreya Buddha.
The views from the summit are considered among the best in South Korea, encompassing numerous islands dotting the coastline, making it a particularly popular spot for sunrise and sunset viewing. On clear days, Tsushima Island in Japan can sometimes be seen.
The mountain's diverse ecosystem supports a variety of flora and fauna, contributing to its natural appeal.
