Charles Hawkins (Medal of Honor)
Charles Hawkins was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. He served as a Private in Company C, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. Hawkins was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of New Bern, North Carolina on March 14, 1862.
During the battle, Hawkins voluntarily remained with his artillery piece, which was under heavy enemy fire. Despite the significant danger, he continued to operate the gun, helping to suppress the Confederate defenses. His bravery and dedication to duty were instrumental in the Union victory at New Bern.
