Gina Neff

Gina Neff is an American sociologist specializing in the study of technology, culture, and work. She is currently a Professor of Technology & Society at the Oxford Internet Institute and a Professorial Fellow at Balliol College, University of Oxford.

Neff's research focuses on how technology shapes social interactions, labor markets, and organizational structures. She is particularly known for her work on digital labor, the gig economy, and the social and cultural impacts of data-driven technologies. She has explored topics such as the emotional labor involved in online platforms, the challenges faced by contingent workers in the digital age, and the ethical considerations surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in various industries.

Prior to her position at Oxford, Neff held faculty positions at the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego. She received her Ph.D. in Communication from Columbia University.

Neff is the author and co-author of several books, including Venture Labor: Work and the Burden of Risk in Innovative Industries, Self-Tracking, and Automating Inequality: How High-Tech Tools Profile, Police, and Punish the Poor (with Virginia Eubanks).
