John Bourne (artist)
John Bourne (1943 – 2019) was a British artist known primarily for his landscape paintings and etchings. He was particularly recognized for his depictions of industrial and urban scenes, often rendered in a highly detailed and atmospheric style.
Bourne studied at the Liverpool College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He exhibited widely throughout his career, including shows at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and numerous commercial galleries. His work is held in several public and private collections.
His artistic process often involved sketching en plein air, directly observing and capturing the details of his chosen locations. He then used these sketches as the basis for larger studio paintings or etchings. Bourne's work often focused on the subtle beauty he found within seemingly ordinary or overlooked environments, revealing a unique perspective on the urban and industrial landscape.
Bourne was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. His etchings are particularly valued for their technical skill and the evocative quality of their line work. He is remembered as a significant figure in British landscape art, with a distinctive vision and a mastery of his chosen mediums.
