Passport (band)

Passport was a German jazz-fusion band formed in 1970 by saxophonist Klaus Doldinger. The band is notable for its blending of jazz, rock, funk, and European folk music elements, creating a distinctive and internationally recognized sound.

Doldinger, already a well-known figure in German jazz, formed Passport after disbanding his earlier quartet. The band's lineup shifted over the years, but core members frequently included Curt Cress on drums, Wolfgang Schmid on bass, and Kristian Schultze on keyboards.

Passport released a string of successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Passport, Second Passport, Cross-Collateral, Infinity Machine, and Iguacu. Their music often featured complex arrangements, improvisational solos, and a strong emphasis on melody and rhythm.

Passport enjoyed considerable commercial success, particularly in Europe, and toured extensively. Their music was also featured in various film and television soundtracks, further broadening their audience.

While the band's activity waned in later years, they remained an influential force in the jazz-fusion genre, and Doldinger continued to lead iterations of the band for live performances. Passport is remembered for its unique sound, instrumental virtuosity, and contribution to the development of European jazz-fusion.
