Vienne (river)

The Vienne is a major river in southwestern France. It is a tributary of the Loire, flowing into it near Candes-Saint-Martin. The river is approximately 363 kilometers (226 miles) long.

The Vienne's source is on the Plateau de Millevaches, in the Corrèze department. It flows generally northwest, passing through several departments, including Creuse, Haute-Vienne (named after the river), Vienne, and Indre-et-Loire. Major towns along its course include Limoges, Confolens, and Châtellerault.

The river's drainage basin covers a significant area, and its tributaries include the Creuse, Gartempe, Taurion, and Briance. The Vienne has historically been important for transportation and industry, although its importance in these areas has declined. It is also used for recreation, including fishing and kayaking. The river's water quality has been a subject of concern in recent years, with efforts underway to improve it.
