Purfleet

Purfleet is a town in the Thurrock unitary district of Essex, England. Historically a civil parish, it lies close to the River Thames, adjacent to the A13 road.

Purfleet's name is believed to derive from the Anglo-Saxon "Purde-fleot," meaning "brook frequented by snipe". Its strategic location on the Thames has made it a site of historical significance.

  • Royal Gunpowder Magazine: From the mid-18th century, Purfleet became the site of a major Royal Gunpowder Magazine, designed to store and test gunpowder for the British military. Parts of the former Magazine complex are now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, due to their historical and ecological value.
