Donald Stuart (minister)

Donald Stuart (1835 – 1913) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister and Gaelic scholar. He served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland in 1899.

Born in Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire, Stuart studied at the University of Edinburgh and the Free Church College, Edinburgh. He was ordained as minister of the Free Church in Lochearnhead in 1864, where he served until 1874. He then moved to Inverness Free High Church, remaining there until his retirement in 1907.

Stuart was a prominent figure in the Free Church of Scotland and a strong advocate for the Gaelic language and culture. He contributed significantly to Gaelic hymnody and published extensively in Gaelic. His notable works include contributions to translations of religious texts into Gaelic and writings on the history of the Free Church in the Highlands. He was also involved in educational initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting Gaelic language skills. Stuart died in Inverness.
