John Davies (bibliographer and genealogist)
John Davies (1816 – 1891) was a Welsh bibliographer, genealogist, and Independent minister. Born in Llangadfan, Montgomeryshire, he is best known for his extensive work in cataloging Welsh books and manuscripts, and for his contributions to Welsh genealogy.
Davies was largely self-educated. He developed a passion for Welsh literature and history early in life, and dedicated himself to studying and preserving Welsh cultural heritage. He served as a minister in various chapels throughout Wales, but his scholarly pursuits remained a constant focus.
His most significant contribution was the compilation of a comprehensive bibliography of Welsh books. This involved meticulous research and painstaking examination of library collections and private holdings throughout Wales and beyond. This bibliography, though largely unpublished during his lifetime, formed the basis for later bibliographic works and remains a valuable resource for researchers.
Davies was also an avid genealogist, meticulously tracing the lineage of numerous Welsh families. He collected and transcribed parish records, wills, and other historical documents to build detailed family trees. While some of his genealogical work may contain inaccuracies due to the limitations of available sources at the time, it provides valuable insights into Welsh family history and social structures.
His unpublished manuscripts are held in various libraries, including the National Library of Wales, and continue to be studied by scholars interested in Welsh bibliography and genealogy. John Davies' dedication to preserving and documenting Welsh history and culture has secured his place as an important figure in Welsh scholarship.
