Martand Singh (textile conservator)

Martand Singh (1947-2017), also known as "Mapu," was an Indian textile conservationist, historian, and cultural preservationist. He was a leading figure in the revival and documentation of traditional Indian textiles and crafts. Singh is best known for his pioneering work in creating awareness about the importance of preserving India's textile heritage and for his efforts in supporting artisans and craftspeople. He founded the organization Vishwakarma Exhibitions, which curated exhibitions showcasing Indian textiles and crafts, both nationally and internationally. Singh was a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, for his contributions to the field of arts and culture. His publications and research have been instrumental in shaping the understanding and appreciation of Indian textile traditions. He played a significant role in advising museums and institutions on textile conservation practices and collection management.
