Scorpion (dinghy)
The Scorpion is a British sailing dinghy designed by Jack Chippendale in 1959. It is a two-person, double-chine, centerboard dinghy intended primarily for racing. The class is recognized by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).
The design features a relatively high performance hull shape, capable of planing in moderate winds. Early Scorpions were typically constructed from wood, but modern boats are predominantly made from fiberglass or composite materials. The class rules allow for some flexibility in equipment and construction, leading to continuous development within a controlled framework.
The Scorpion dinghy has a strong and active racing fleet in the United Kingdom. It is known for its challenging handling characteristics, making it a popular choice for experienced sailors. The Scorpion Class Owners Association (SCOA) manages the class rules, organizes racing events, and promotes the class.
