John Johnstone (baseball)
John Johnstone (born May 25, 1945, died December 16, 2018) was an American professional baseball player. He was a right-handed relief pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 14 seasons, from 1966 to 1978, and again in 1980.
Johnstone played for the California Angels (1966-1970), Philadelphia Phillies (1972-1973), St. Louis Cardinals (1973), Oakland Athletics (1974-1975), San Diego Padres (1976-1977), and Los Angeles Dodgers (1978, 1980).
Known for his quirky personality and practical jokes, Johnstone also possessed a live fastball. He was a member of the Oakland Athletics teams that won the World Series in 1974 and 1975. He finished his career with a 56-43 record, 76 saves, and a 3.24 earned run average (ERA) in 531 games.
After his playing career, Johnstone remained active in baseball, making numerous appearances at baseball events and participating in old-timers' games. He also worked as a television commentator and radio personality.
