Cotoca
Cotoca is a town in the Santa Cruz Department of Bolivia, located approximately 20 kilometers east of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. It is the capital of the Cotoca Municipality, within the Andrés Ibáñez Province.
Cotoca is best known as a religious center due to the Basilica of the Virgin of Cotoca, a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The basilica is a popular pilgrimage site, particularly during the annual festival held in December, which draws thousands of visitors from across Bolivia and neighboring countries. The festival celebrates the Virgin of Cotoca, the patron saint of the town, and features religious processions, traditional music, dance, and local crafts.
The economy of Cotoca is largely based on agriculture, livestock farming, and commerce related to the religious tourism. The town also has a number of small businesses and workshops that cater to the needs of the local population and tourists.
Cotoca offers visitors a glimpse into Bolivian culture and religious traditions. Besides the basilica, the town features a central plaza, local markets, and opportunities to experience the hospitality of the community. While largely rural, Cotoca benefits from its proximity to the much larger city of Santa Cruz, which provides access to a wider range of services and amenities.
