Peter Fenger (1719–1774)
Peter Fenger (born 1719, died 1774) was a Danish merchant and slave trader active in the Danish West Indies (present-day U.S. Virgin Islands) during the 18th century. He held significant positions in the colonial administration and played a crucial role in the economic life of St. Croix.
Fenger accumulated considerable wealth through his commercial activities, primarily involving the trade of enslaved Africans, sugar, and other commodities. He owned multiple plantations and enslaved a large number of people. His business dealings were complex and involved partnerships with other prominent figures in the Danish West Indies and in Denmark itself.
While details regarding Fenger's personal life are limited, his business records and involvement in colonial administration provide insight into the economic and social structures of the Danish West Indies during the era of plantation slavery. He represents a key example of the individuals who benefited from and perpetuated the transatlantic slave trade.
