CocoRosie
CocoRosie is an American musical group formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady. Their music is characterized by its experimental and often unconventional nature, blending elements of opera, folk, electronica, hip-hop, and found sound. Key aspects of their sound include child-like vocals, dissonant harmonies, beatboxing, and the use of unusual instruments and found objects to create soundscapes.
The sisters, who were raised separately after their parents divorced, reconnected in Paris and began creating music together in Sierra's apartment. This initially private collaboration led to their debut album, La Maison de Mon Rêve (2004), which established their distinctive style.
CocoRosie's music frequently explores themes of childhood, spirituality, identity, and sexuality. Their lyrics often incorporate surreal imagery and stream-of-consciousness narratives. Beyond their musical output, the sisters are also known for their visual aesthetic, which includes elaborate costumes, makeup, and stage design.
They have released several studio albums, including Noah's Ark (2005), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), Grey Oceans (2010), Tales of a GrassWidow (2013), and Put the Shine On (2020). CocoRosie has collaborated with various artists across different disciplines, including Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons), Devendra Banhart, and Yoko Ono. They have also created musical scores for theater and performance art pieces.
CocoRosie’s distinct and often polarizing sound has garnered both critical acclaim and criticism. Their experimental approach and willingness to challenge conventional musical forms have solidified their position as significant figures in the avant-garde music scene.
