Monifieth
Monifieth is a town and former burgh in Angus, Scotland, situated approximately 5 miles east of Dundee on the north bank of the Firth of Tay. Historically part of the county of Angus, it now falls within the Angus Council area.
History: Monifieth has a long history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Iron Age. Its name is thought to be derived from the Gaelic Monadh Fiadhoich, meaning "hill of the deer forest". The area was important strategically, being close to the mouth of the Tay. The town developed around its historic parish church. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Monifieth became a popular resort town, attracting visitors with its sandy beach and golf courses. The area also had a strong jute industry, linked to the mills in Dundee.
