Haaren (river)
The Haaren is a small river located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. It is a tributary of the Emscher river. The Haaren's course lies primarily within the city of Gelsenkirchen. Historically, like the Emscher, the Haaren was used as an open wastewater canal for industrial and domestic effluent. In recent years, efforts have been undertaken to renaturalize the Haaren and improve water quality as part of the larger Emscher conversion project.
