Klushino

Klushino is a village in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located approximately 20 kilometers west of Gzhatsk (now Gagarin). It is historically significant as the site of a battle during the Time of Troubles in the early 17th century, specifically on June 24, 1610 (Julian calendar).

Battle of Klushino

The Battle of Klushino was a decisive victory for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth forces, led by Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski, over a Russian army combined with Swedish mercenaries, commanded by Dmitry Shuisky. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Polish cavalry (Winged Hussars) effectively routed the larger Russo-Swedish force.

Significance

The victory at Klushino allowed Polish forces to advance on Moscow and briefly occupy the city. It significantly weakened the rule of Tsar Vasily IV and contributed to the period of instability and foreign intervention known as the Time of Troubles. The battle is considered a notable example of Polish military prowess and the effectiveness of its cavalry tactics in the early modern period.
