Si River
The Si River (泗河, Sì Hé), also known as the Sishui River, is a river located primarily in Shandong Province, China. Historically a major river, it has significantly diminished in size and importance due to natural changes and human activity, particularly the diversion of water and agricultural practices.
The Si River originates in the Yishan Mountains in southern Shandong Province and historically flowed into Hongze Lake. Currently, much of its flow is diverted for irrigation and industrial use, leading to reduced volume and, in some stretches, seasonal drying.
The river is significant historically and culturally as it flowed through the ancient state of Lu, the birthplace of Confucius. The area surrounding the Si River is rich in historical sites and archaeological finds relating to Confucianism and ancient Chinese civilization. The river is mentioned in classical Chinese texts and played a role in transportation and agriculture in the region for centuries.
