Ungava (electoral district)
Ungava is a provincial electoral district in Quebec, Canada. It is located in the northernmost part of the province, encompassing a vast territory that includes the Nunavik region, primarily inhabited by Inuit, as well as portions of the Nord-du-Québec region populated by Cree and Naskapi communities.
Historically, the riding has undergone several name changes and boundary adjustments. It was originally created in 1965 under the name Abitibi-East. It was then renamed Radisson in 1972. In 2001, its name was changed to Ungava. The riding's boundaries have been redrawn several times to reflect population changes and demographic shifts in northern Quebec.
The electoral district is known for its unique demographic profile and the challenges of representing a geographically vast and sparsely populated region with a significant Indigenous population. Issues specific to the riding often include resource development, land rights, self-government, access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure in remote communities.
The current Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for Ungava is Maïtée Labrecque-Saganash of Québec solidaire, elected in the 2022 provincial election.
Geographically, Ungava covers a large portion of northern Quebec, bordered by Hudson Bay to the west, Ungava Bay to the north, and Labrador to the east. The territory is characterized by tundra, boreal forest, lakes, and rivers.
