Stöfler (crater)
Stöfler is a large lunar impact crater located in the southern highlands on the Moon's near side. It lies north of the crater Maurolycus and west of Faraday. To the northwest of Stöfler is the smaller crater Fernelius.
The crater is ancient and heavily eroded, with features that have been worn and rounded by subsequent impacts. Several smaller craters lie across the rim and interior of Stöfler. The most notable of these is the crater Stöfler K, which lies across the northern rim. Other smaller craters include Stöfler G on the southwestern rim and Stöfler S on the southeastern inner wall.
The interior floor of Stöfler is relatively flat, but it is marked by numerous small craterlets and irregularities. There are also some low ridges and hills scattered across the floor. Due to its age and the degree of erosion, Stöfler lacks a central peak.
The crater is named after the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Stöffler (1452–1531).
