William Stourton (speaker)
William Stourton (c. 1430 – 1485) was an English knight, politician, and twice Speaker of the House of Commons. He was a member of the prominent Stourton family, seated at Stourton, Wiltshire.
Stourton served as Member of Parliament for Wiltshire in 1455, 1460, 1467, 1472, and 1484. He was first elected Speaker of the House of Commons in 1467 during the reign of Edward IV. He was re-elected Speaker in 1472, holding the position until 1475.
His tenure as Speaker occurred during a period of relative stability in England, following the early years of the Wars of the Roses. His election and re-election suggest he commanded the respect of his peers and enjoyed the confidence of the crown.
Beyond his parliamentary service, Stourton held various local offices, indicative of his standing within Wiltshire society. He was likely involved in managing the Stourton family estates and contributing to the administration of the county.
William Stourton married Margaret Chidiock, daughter of Sir John Chidiock. He was succeeded by his son, John Stourton, who continued the family's political involvement.
