Alonsoa

Alonsoa is a genus of flowering plants in the family Scrophulariaceae, sometimes also placed in the family Calceolariaceae. They are native to South America, primarily found in the Andes region, with a range extending from Colombia to Chile and Argentina.

Description: Alonsoas are herbaceous perennials, often grown as annuals in temperate climates. They are characterized by their showy, vibrant flowers, typically in shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink. The flowers are asymmetrical, with four petals, and are often borne in racemes or panicles. Leaves are generally opposite and toothed.

Cultivation: Several species and cultivars of Alonsoa are popular in horticulture. They are relatively easy to grow in well-drained soil and full sun. Propagation is usually done by seed or cuttings. They are valued for their long blooming period and attractive flowers, making them suitable for borders, containers, and cut flower arrangements.

  • Alonsoa acutifolia
  • Alonsoa incisifolia (often called Mask Flower)
  • Alonsoa linearis
  • Alonsoa meridionalis
  • Alonsoa unilabiata
