Victory Banner (Azerbaijan)
The Victory Banner (Azerbaijani: Zəfər Bayrağı) is a banner displayed in Azerbaijan to commemorate the country's victory in the Second Karabakh War in 2020. It represents the Azerbaijani flag raised in various locations throughout the Nagorno-Karabakh region during and after the conflict.
While no single, officially standardized "Victory Banner" exists as a distinct flag from the national flag, the term refers to the collection of Azerbaijani flags hoisted in liberated cities and regions, particularly in Shusha. These flags symbolize the reclamation of territories previously controlled by Armenian forces. The display of these flags is viewed as a significant national symbol of triumph and territorial integrity regained.
The Victory Banner is often referenced and displayed during Victory Day celebrations in Azerbaijan on November 8th. It is an important symbol of national pride and commemorates the soldiers who fought in the Second Karabakh War. The flag (specifically, representations of it flown in liberated territories) serves as a tangible reminder of the conflict's outcome and the restoration of Azerbaijani sovereignty. While not a physical object held centrally, the concept of the Victory Banner is deeply ingrained in Azerbaijani national identity and remembrance.
