Ampugnano
Ampugnano is a frazione (hamlet) of the comune of Sovicille, located in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. Situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Siena, Ampugnano is primarily known for being the proposed site of a new airport meant to serve the city of Siena and the surrounding region.
The proposed airport project has been the subject of considerable debate and controversy for several decades. Proponents argued that an airport would boost tourism and economic development in the Siena area, while opponents raised concerns about environmental impact, noise pollution, and the suitability of the location. The project has faced numerous delays and setbacks due to funding issues, environmental regulations, and local opposition.
As of late 2023, the airport remains unbuilt and its future is uncertain. The site continues to be a point of contention, representing the ongoing struggle between development pressures and the desire to preserve the natural beauty and historical character of the Tuscan countryside. While the name "Ampugnano" is not widely recognized outside of the Siena region, it is often associated with the contentious airport project. The area itself is predominantly agricultural, characterized by rolling hills and vineyards.
